Behind The Lens

Location

During a trip to New York City, I was able to schedule some time to work with a local model in a studio. What could have been better during a trip to NYC?

Time

It was my third and final day in New York. I was so excited to be in the studio. My day started off by grabbing a bagel & coffee and then walking a few blocks to the studio. Nothing better than soaking in the city vibe before a shoot.

Lighting

The idea for the lighting was to re-create a circa 40's feeling. The lighting consisted of three Profoto B1's. The first light was on the right in a beauty dish. My second light was to the left in a gridded strip box. The final light was behind the model with a standard reflector to highlight the backdrop. I was so happy with the result in creating a dramatic fashion look.

Equipment

This image was created with a Nikon D750 with a Tamron 24-70 f2.8. I always have my camera set up in this manner. It allows me to run and gun at a moment's notice.

Inspiration

Our model came out with a hairstyle reminiscent of the '40s and wearing an incredible faux fur. I immediately knew this image would be shown in B&W. Before we started shooting I told our model I wanted an Old School glam feel with attitude. Is it me or did our model kill it or what! Whenever I can create a dramatic image such as this I'm all in.

Editing

After importing the images from the shoot, this image was initially edited in Camera Raw. The final edit was completed in Photoshop to convert the image to B&W and some fine-tuning.

In my camera bag

In my bag, you will always find my Nikon D750, with a Tamron 24-70 f2.8 & Tamron 70-200 f2.8. As well, I carry one Nikon SB700 speedlight for some creative lighting.

Feedback

Over the years I have learned to talk with the model discuss your idea & feel for the final image. The let the model give you the poses that come naturally to them. This works so much better than trying to tell a model how to pose.
