Location
An overall view of Vernazza, one of the villages of the famous Cinque Terre area, in Italy.Time
We arrived in the late afternoon but it took us a little while to find what I considered the right spot. The photo was actually made just before 8 p.m.Lighting
The weather was uncertain, to say the least. The light was flat and the scene only came to life when a few lights started to appear in. the village.Equipment
I used a tripod, my trusted Nikon D850, and a wide-angle zoom (18-35 mm). I didn't have any ND filter so I close my lens as much as possible to get as slow a shutter speed as I could.Inspiration
At the time, I was experimenting a lot with slow shutter speed and I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to use this technique to both flatten the surface of the sea and get some interesting aspect of the moving clouds.Editing
The resulting photo was quite dark and I like it this way. I increased the brightness of the lights in the village as well as the reflection. in the sea using masking. I also added a few lights around. In my camera bag
I usually have my D850 and two zooms (24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8. Then, depending on the purpose of the outing or the trip, I bring along a wider angle lens or some very fast prime lenses. I usually bring a tripod when I plan to capture some landscape photos.Feedback
I do believe that having an idea of what we're looking for, and a vision of the scene helps decide how we capture or make the photograph.
