Location
This photo was taken outside on a campus that has two ponds with winding paths lined with many different types of plants and trees. A beautiful day in Pennsylvania in spring where everything was blooming. This particular campus has many exotic plants and flowering was at it's peak. This image was spur of the moment when I noticed these beautiful flowers on a bush that matched the lipstick of model Lexi. As we walked around the campus trails and over bridges, we came across many very interesting locations and backdrops for shots during this shoot.Time
This was in mid-day, around 2:00pm.Lighting
The lighting was a 43" soft box umbrella using a speed light at approximately 3 feet away at 45 degrees.Equipment
Camera-Nikon D810, Lens-Nikon 85mm 1.8f, Flash-Nikon SB-800 Speedlight, 43" Pro Photo soft box umbrella mounted on ProPhoto light stand.Inspiration
This was inspired by the flowers on the bush that matched the model's lipstick. I decided to have her pull the branches down around her head to create a crown/head dress around her head. The contrast between Lexi's brown hair and eyes, coupled with the green leaves and violet spring flowers was a perfect combination of color, shape, depth, texture, and lighting.Editing
Post processing was mostly PS-CS6 to remove over highlighted areas and a slight increase of color, some blemish removal. Fortunately, Lexi has almost perfect skin and required very little post processing. She is a master with makeup and saves me tons of time in post every time I shoot with her.In my camera bag
My base is always my Nikon D810 with the Nikon 24-70mm 2.8f lens attached. It is the most versatile lens that I use for at least 60% of my shooting. The must have lens brush and cloth, straps and Lowpro long lens camera bag for whatever extra lenses that will be used so they can remain attached while putting back into the bag. A 77mm Nikon Polarizer filter for some landscape or other very bright situations, air shows, etc. Extra batteries, as well as car charger for longer shoots. A power brick for hiking to shoot locations. If tugging along studio strobes for outdoor Fashion shoots, I take along the Paul C Buff Vegabond Mini, which is good for up to 400 shots on one battery.Feedback
My only advise is to keep an open mind and keep your eyes open for opportunities that other photographers would overlook. You have to create with what you have, and if you can find any type of prop that you can use, try using it to make your images more interesting. I like to use unconventional props and poses for my style I never stop developing. In my opinion, as a photographer, you never stop learning as an art form. So everything you can do at each moment can count as another creation and learning experience. I put myself in challenging situations by meeting with models on some shoots and creating the ideas as I go. Some photographers insist you "have to plan everything", but if you are creative, you can also do both.
