Location
I took this photo during a shootout with several other talented photographers and lovely models, at a mansion on the outskirts of Little Rock, Arkansas. The all day workshop was hosted by a good friend, and featured the immensely talented glamour photographer, Nino Batista.Time
The early afternoon having been spent shooting around a pool, this was taken during the mid afternoon; when the harsh, blazing sun overhead and the scalding heat of July had forced us inside.Lighting
I'm a huge fan of natural light, using only that whenever I can, and this shot is a perfect example of how wonderful it's effects can be. Nichole is standing in a darkened media room, lit only by the sunlight falling through the shuttered single window she's looking through.Equipment
I shot this photo handheld, in natural light, with a Canon 5D Mark iii, a 24?70mm f/2.8L II USM, and a battery grip to help balance out the heavy lens.Inspiration
I remember walking down the upstairs hallway of the Little Rock mansion that we were shooting in, and seeing the lovely Nichole standing in the only light filtering into the nearly pitch dark room, through the single window. The natural light was amazing on her skin, making it softly pop in the dark of the room, and I knew it was something I had to capture.Editing
I did a frequency separation to help smooth out the very few blemishes of her skin, as well as some dodging and burning to accentuate the soft shadows and highlights. The scene was almost perfect as it was, so I didn't want to change anything, just accentuate what was already there. In my camera bag
I rarely go anywhere without my Canon 5d Mark iii and a few "essential" lenses. Namely the EF 24?70mm f/2.8L II USM, EF 85mm f/1.8 USM, and the ever present "nifty fifty," the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM. I also am known to keep the Rokinon 24mm f/1.4, along with my Vanguard Alta Pro 263AT tripod equipped with a SBH-250 ballhead, an intervalometer, and various lights and light shapers handy.Feedback
My best shots always seem to come from either sudden, in the moment inspiration, or just sheer blind luck of being in the right place at the right time, so my advice would be to always be alert and ready to capture that perfect shot when the opportunity presents itself. I'm not saying that hours of planning and preparation don't pay of, by all means they make for amazingly beautiful and complex shots, but sometimes the simplicity of the natural moments around you are what you'll find are you favorite when you go through your memory cards.
