Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on Rhodes Island/ Greece. We were sitting at an café after we took a long walk into the mountains - we were pretty thursty, dirty and weary. This old forest ranger came to the café and it took only a few seconds we talked with him, had fun, laughed together. He told us about his hard life there in the mountains - he was already 67 years old! - and about his hope having enough time here on earth to enjoy his retirement. We had a wonderful hour together and I asked him wether I may take some photos - and he allowed me to. He had such a hard life, hard work, less money....but he smiled and said he was thankful for his life there in the mountains of beautiful Rhodes. Such a lovely face - look at his eyes! We simply fell in love with him.

Time

I think it was early afternoon - in may. In my opinion the most beautiful time of the year on Rhodes, this beautiful island. We sat in the shadows of the trees in front of the café and enjoyed the warm glimpse of the sunlight shining through the leaves.

Lighting

I love natural light. I love the colours it paints on every subject. I love the play of light and shadows and its warmth. So - of course - I took this photo with natural light. I don't use flashlights at all, except I take a still life indoor.

Equipment

I used my beloved Nikon D7200 with my Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM. Freehand with no flash.

Inspiration

It was the situation which inspired me and of course this wonderful man who was so unbelievable nice and open minded. In spite of his hard life with many tragedies and drama he didn't gave up on life and people. His smile was so honest and nice and friendly. I wanted to share this character in only one shot, I wanted to transport this feeling I had in just one picture. Hopefully I reached this aim.....

Editing

I converted the photo to black and white - I wanted to show my intention as pure as possible with no distraction through to many colours. Additionally I did some sharpening and lighted up the picture. Ready.

In my camera bag

Oh...ok...normally I have my Nikon D7200 with the Sigma 18-250mm lens on it, batteries and.....that's it. If I go out for a special motive (like sunsets or so), I have infra red remote, tripod, microfibre cloth, ND-filters, stop-watch and actually maybe a macro-lens with me.

Feedback

Have the courage to talk with people even if they may be strangers. Show interest, be honest, friendly and take enough time to talk with them. Look behind the curtain, show them your empathy, be patient and respectful.
