Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken along the south bank of The River Thames in London. Its a great view of Westminster bridge stretching over the water to The Houses of Parliament.

Time

Id been out with the camera most of the day and just starting to head back east. Its always tempting to photograph Westminster and i can't normally walk past without taking at least one photo. The crowds were not too bad alone by the back so i thought id set up for a long exposure, so glad i did.

Lighting

It was a pretty cloudy day but the light kept shining through. I could have possible done with a little more sun but the clouds gave a great mood to the photo and i achieved what i was looking for.

Equipment

This photo was taken with my Nikon D600, Zeiss 25mm, Formatt Hitech 16 stop ND filter all mounted on a Manfrotto tripod. Its my main set up for long exposure photography. The filter is the best money can buy, the lens is a wonderful focal length and the tripod very sturdy. Id recommend any of the kit to anyone.

Inspiration

Its such a classic shot, normally taken from the other side of the bridge. I have many in my portfolio with the bridge on the right. Ive been meaning for a while to get a few more with the bridge on the left. The great sky was perfect so i took the opportunity to grab another fantastic shot of this iconic location.

Editing

I process most of my images in black and white. To do this i use Lightroom and Silver Efex Pro. Great tools and i can normally get the exact look I'm going for.

In my camera bag

Often carrying my Nikon D600 and a infrared converted D7000 with a selection of lenses. All my lenses are now primes as they are so much better to work with and make you think abut the composition a little more. My two Zeiss lenses will be first in, 25mm and 50mm. Im happy shooting with both of these and really need anything else. A 18mm and a old ais 100mm often join to give me a few more options should i need them.

Feedback

London is full of classic shots and opportunities to grab something new. Go explore the city with camera ready to go and see what you find.
