The photo was taken on the Stockholm metro network in Sweden. Their stations are so unique and fascinating. The rocky facade and the bright colours really make them stand out. Id love to go back and just spend a few days exploring all the stations.Time
The photo was taken in the afternoon during the week. I planned on going on the Sunday morning to hopefully find it empty but as i was passing on the Friday io thought id have a look. It wasn't too busy and i could get a few pictures in-between trains.Lighting
Being in an underground station the light is pretty poor. A high ISO was needed as i didn't have a tripod. Modern cameras can handle high ISO so this wasn't too much of an issue for me.Equipment
On this photo i was using a Nikon D600 and a Nikon 20mm f/2.8. Its a great set up and its what i normally use when travelling. The light and small 20mm really produces some fantastic images.Inspiration
I knew of the crazy stations before i visited Stockholm, they were a must see on my visit to the Swedish capital. I normally shoot black and white monochrome photos but this amazing red rock had to be seen.Editing
As the red is so strong it had to be kept. I used selective colouring to bring out the lovely red and mute all the other colours. This helped the stairs glow silver and the red to really shine. There is some selective sharpening and clarity added to parts of the image. I shoot a lot of tube stations working in London, these are normally proceed in black and white. Its a work flow I'm used to and i apple it here too but with the strong red remaining. In my camera bag
As i was on a short weekend break i didn't have too much with me. Specialising in extreme long exposure photography i always have a tripod, ND filters, remote, wide angle lens and of course a camera. This trip i had the small but steady Manfrotto Befree tripod, a Formatt Hitech 16 stop filter, Nikon 20mm lens and a D600,Feedback
Wait for the right time and the station to be empty as possible, get as low as you can it gives a more creative angle.
