The scene out the rather hazy window is looking back at another caboose following the one I was in. I like this unedited composition because of the black framing and for how the window is at an angle. The view brings a feeling of one being back in the old days maybe during a storm working as a brakeman……..Not until 1898 did the caboose acquire its distinctive "cupola." The purpose of this high seat surrounded by windows was to allow the conductor to see what was going on all the way up the train. At that time, applying the brakes had to be done manually by turning a wheel located on each car. The brakemen used ladders to climb to the top of the train, and would walk along the roof of the cars in order to access the brake wheel on each of the cars. From his cupola, the conductor could see and direct this activity.

This is a great shot and tells the history of what you're looking at very nicely

Thanks! Knowing your love for trains makes both your comment and the "Genius" peer recognition most precious.
