Meant to give you an All Star for this phenomenal photo! But VB's new award system is not cooperating, as thousands of others will agree I'm sure! Anyway, congrats on this...it's gorgeous.

Yes it is important for the light to be low in the sky to capture this specular light under the curl of the wave. It is very important to have David Orias with you as he has this down to a science!Equipment
Canon 50D, 100-400L Lens, with a tripod because you should have your SS at 1/10 This one was 1/25 You need to pan as the waves come in.Inspiration
Not what inspired me, it's WHO inspired me and his name is David Orias http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2013/03/california-waves-photographed-by-david-orias/ I was lucky enough to be on a photography site with David and I reached out to him and he took me out and showed me how he captured these incredible wave shots. I only got to shoot with him once as I left California but it was a wonderful experience and he taught me so much. He photos put my capture to shame. He is a very talented photographer who I'm happy to call a friend.Editing

David watches the angle of the waves coming in to do this. They need to be south bound waves with the light coming up behind us in the Eastern sky as you face west looking at the Pacific Ocean.
