I took this photo on the Northern Arizona University campus in Flagstaff, Arizona. My husband and I like to visit and explore the campus each year during Homecoming or summer time. Orange is my favorite color, and this was perfect little flower to photograph.Time
It was taken in the morning. As my husband and I explored the NAU campus in the summer of 2013, the flowers that decorated everywhere were so gorgeous. There was nobody on campus, as it was summer, so it was a perfect opportunity to get many photos.Lighting
Since it was in the morning, the lighting around campus was still a bit shadowy, since the sun was still hidden behind the taller buildings. I felt like I got the perfect lighting for this particular photo, as it was not bright and sunny, yet the monsoon clouds had not taken over yet.Equipment
I am a very simple person when it comes to photography. I have a Canon Rebel T3 that I have had since 2012. It has been so easy to learn on, and for an amateur photographer such as myself, it is perfect. No other equipment was used, except the manual settings.Inspiration
I love photographing close-ups, especially flowers. The detail and beauty that I am able to bring out in bright colorful flowers is my favorite thing to do. And if you notice on the bottom of the flower, there is a tiny dew drop from the monsoon moisture that was in the air. Tiny details like that just make the picture pop even more. The color of this flower was my favorite, as orange is my favorite color. Bright colors and details are so fun to capture.Editing
For this picture, I did not do any post-processing whatsoever. I had not taught myself to learn to use any sort of photo editing program at the time, since I'd only had my Canon for 8 months. So I was fortunate enough to be able to capture the natural beauty, light and color of this flower. As of now, I do use Adobe Light Room. But I have not gone back to edit this particular photo in Light Room.In my camera bag
I don't carry much with me. I have 3 lens total. One for shooting landscapes, one for shooting macro and the general lens that I use almost all the time. As stated before, I am a very simple photographer. I don't have the means to be able to afford anything fancy, nor do I really need it. My landscape and macro lens were both gifts from my husband. I do have a tripod, but I normally only use that when I am shooting (rare) self-portraits.Feedback
Use manual mode! You won't get the results you are looking for if you keep your camera on auto. Or use a macro lens. Those are perfect for capturing anything small you want to see up close, such as flowers, butterflies and insects. Don't take one photo, look at it and then give up. Sometimes it takes several shots to get the perfect one. I have definitely learned that way. Also, I have taken advantage of free classes on how to learn the basics of my camera and Light Room. Look for these classes in your community on Facebook or on the website of the community center within your neighborhood. I have several friends that are avid photographers and constantly give me tips on how to improve this or that. All you have to do is ask.
