Trekking across Uganda, over 5 weeks into the walk, we came upon this dusty little village in the middle of nowhere. But they had cold - - ok, cool, as, in the shade - - beer. After days of nothing but purified, sorta, warm water from dubious rivers, it was heaven.
But this family saw my camera and begged me to take a picture of their whole family, new baby (which I'm holding) and us. I set up the camera, drew a line in the red earth, and handed it off to a friend of this lovely family, instructing him in hand signals on the intricacies of taking a photo with a 35mm camera which he'd certainly never heard of.
I sent them a framed print after I got home. After I had lots of pizza and cold beer and a real bath. Right after that.

1994! Skinny, roasted by the sun, always hungry. I was part of an The Congo Expedition to trace Henry Morton Stanley's search across Africa to discover the source of the Nile and Congo Rivers. I hiked the segment from Tanzania to Zaire, hauling a 45-pound backpack. Included crossing Lake Victoria on a huge 18-hour ferry which sank the following year killing 1100 people! Trekked all the way across Uganda on mostly footpaths, sleeping in tents in fields, by the road, eating what we could find which often wasn't much. Incredible adventure. But fantastic encounters like visiting this family far made up for two feet full of blisters and a grumbling stomach.
