The first light of 2014. I captured this a few hours before sunrise. I often hike to where I want to shoot an hour before shoot time, but on the first of the year I decided to get there two hours early: I didn't want anyone to claim this location that I had resisted sharing photos from all year just to make this one special. The foreground is illuminated by 3 hits of the light of my cell phone. I wanted to capture the pool when it was full only. Check out "The Last Light" post on JasonMatias . com for images from #sunrise on December 31st through sunrise on the 1st of January. http:--jasonmatias.com-last-light-2013-

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the east side of Oahu, Hawaii near a place called Lanai Lookout. On a clear day, you can see the island of Lanai from here.

Time

This photo was taken around 3AM. Yes, I'm a night owl.

Lighting

The light from the bowl is actually 5 separate flashes from my iPhone torch. I would turn it on and off when the water filled the bowl only. 30s exposure.

Equipment

I used Canon 5DII and a 17-40L lens. Of course I had a tripod and a remote shutter release.

Inspiration

It was New Years' Morning! I knew this is where I wanted to capture the first sunrise of the year here. While this location is semi secrete, I wanted to ensure that no one would take my spot as there is only room for one where my camera is precariously perched. Instead of sleeping after fireworks, I came here.

Editing

I used photoshop to balance the exposure. Now-a-days I do extensive balancing in camera raw, I should take this one back under the microscope!

In my camera bag

I have been traveling light since leaving Hawaii. Seven months, five countries, and 14 times through Customs inspired me to do it all with one camera and one lens. I have a Canon 5DII and 24-70mm Tamron Lens. And that is all. I also have a hefty magfiber tripod made by Manfrotto. I carry three batteries, a remote shutter, a cleaning kit, and CPL. Oh, and there is almost always food in there.

Feedback

Planning is everything! I knew the location, and knew the frame before I even pulled my camera out!
