Originally considered a type of stork, genetic studies indicate that the shoebill is more related to pelicans. It is found in freshwater swamps of central tropical Africa, from southern Sudan and South Sudan through parts of eastern Congo, Rwanda, Uganda, western Tanzania and northern Zambia. It primarily feeds on lungfish. I photographed this one in the Zurich Zoo in Switzerland.
