Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken "lake level" at Lake Moraine, Alberta, British Columbia

Time

This photo was actually taken about 1:00 p.m. When you're sightseeing you have to take what you get when it comes to timing. I was fortunate to have cloud cover on the day I shot this. Sometimes you just get lucky. I like to take as many photos as I can and sometimes...just sometimes lightning strikes. Otherwise, you've got to kiss a lot of frogs. LOL.

Lighting

Be aware of where the sun is in the sky. I always attempt to have the sun at my back but sometimes it's just not possible. If the light is changing constantly due to clouds in the sky, be patient and take multiple shots.

Equipment

For this photo I used the Sony A77 with a Zeiss 24-70 lens.

Inspiration

Banff, Lake Louise, Lake Moraine and most of Alberta British Columbia is so beautiful you find inspiration at every turn.

Editing

I can honestly say that I do not recall altering this image. The color of the water is 100% accurate and the multi-colored canoes just added interest.

In my camera bag

I usually always have a 16-50 lens along with a 75-300 zoom. I love my 24-70 but it is a beast and adds so much weight the strap can actually begin to dig into your neck after a short while. I also carry extra batteries because I often hike and am on the trails for hours at a time. I also carry several filters in my bag.

Feedback

The more you shoot the more your eye will begin to direct your actions. Don't be afraid to "shoot-away" with wild abandon. I often take up to five shots of the same image changing my aperture slightly and also my focus. Since I wear glasses I'm not always certain that I'm truly in focus. I like to take the imagine then zoom in and scan the photo to see if I'm satisfied with the sharpness. Practice your craft whenever you get the chance. Practice truly does help hone your skills. Also, occasionally take time to peruse the many photos on ViewBug (they didn't tell me to say that. LOL). It's an excellent source of inspiration and isn't it INSPIRATION what drives art???
