Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Nishinomiya Tsutakawa Japanese Gardens (Manito Gardens) in Spokane, WA

Time

I took this photo about 10 a.m. If you're there too early, everything will be cast in shadows. The dense foliage can make lighting a challenge. But...if you're at the right place at the right time...magic.

Lighting

Since I wanted a strong reflection, I wanted to make certain that the light that was being diffused through the foliage was at my back.

Equipment

I shoot with a Sony Alpha A77 paired with my Zeiss 24-70 lens. I did not use a tripod for this shot. Hand held.

Inspiration

Manito gardens is a jewel in the Spokane, WA region. In the fall the colors are magnificent and the sky is often so very blue. The Japanese Gardens are very tranquil and peaceful. It's everything a photographer could ask for.

Editing

No additional processing was needed (very rare). Again, I was in the right place at the right time.

In my camera bag

I always take my camera bag whenever there's a possibility that I might find something interesting to shoot. My tripod is always in my backseat and I always have extra batteries and a 75-300 zoom lens in my bag...just in case.

Feedback

Be aware of where the sun is in the sky. Is the light coming through trees? How much light? When I shoot in a place that's known to attract tourists I like to go there "off peak" times when there's a greater possibility that I won't have to work around people. Photography to me is like fishing. It takes a lot of patience, trial and error. If I keep five photos and delete 50 (in a day), then I'd consider that a good day.
