Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was made as I was traveling on a highway between Cornwall, Ontario to the province of Quebec in Canada during the early months of 2021.

Time

We were traveling mid-morning when I made the main exposure here.

Lighting

It was kind of a mildly overcast day with brief periods of diffused sunlight peeking through the light gray sky.

Equipment

I used my Samsung camera phone. I was sitting behind the driver as I anchored my palms against the back window as I framed my shots. I used burst exposures because of the speed of the car so that I would have more chances of obtaining the composition I was envisioning from the scene.

Inspiration

The tall groupings of bare trees and the strong contrast between tones and shapes reminded me of a kind of stripped down minimalism found in some of the aesthetics found in Japanese painting and printmaking. My inspiration was found somewhere in between sumi-e ink painting and ukiyo-e woodblock prints.

Editing

Yes. I needed to fill the empty space in the top right of the frame while adding another large shape to keep in style with my pre-visualization of the scene. Adding a larger than normal moon added the graphic appeal I was looking for as well as evoking a sense of mystery and solitude.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Samsung camera phone as well as my small Fujifilm X-E3 with the XF23mm F2 lens attached. I keep a lens hood on at all times and sometimes use either a circular polarizer, ND filters, or a 10% Cinebloom filter if I want to "round off" some of the extra sharpness of a modern lens.

Feedback

Try to explore other areas of the arts besides photography in order to change your ideas of creating successful images. Look at painting, cinema, sculpture, architecture... or whatever commands your attention and passionate interest. Nobody else sees the world exactly as you do....so start expanding the kinds of things that inspire you.
