Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Lake Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina.

Time

A friend and I left my home at 4am with the plan to get to Lake Mattamuskeet for sunrise (a 2.5 hour drive.) The fog was very thick as we drove but we kept going with the hopes that it would clear. As we got closer, we knew that the fog was going to stay, and once we got to the boardwalk where this shot was taken, I was thrilled that we had lucked into heavy fog!

Lighting

The plan for this image was for beautiful sunrise colors reflecting off the lake, but the weather had other plans. It was close to Halloween and the fog made for a mysterious image that fit with the season.

Equipment

This was shot on an Olympus OMD EM1 Miii. 12-40mm m. zuiko lens, RRS tripod, Lee big stopper filter

Inspiration

When our adventure started, we were hoping for a colorful, calm sunrise reflecting off the lake. (What every photographer wants when they leave the house at 4am for a sunrise shoot.) When I arrived at the lake and saw the foggy mist over the lake I knew exactly what I wanted to do with the scene.

Editing

I didn't do a ton of post-processing as the scene was already mostly black and white. I cropped and played a little to really highlight the lack of color in the scene.

In my camera bag

At the time I always had my Olympus OMD EM1 Mii, 12-40mm and 40-150mm with me. If I'm shooting landscapes, my filters are in my bag. I'm now using a Canon R5 for wildlife. I still love my olympus when I'm in a city, or know I need a light kit.

Feedback

Work with whatever conditions mother nature gives you. My mantra over the past couple years is just say yes. Say yes to whatever adventure presents itself and something good will come of it. You can't get great landscape and wildlife images by sitting on your couch.
