Location
This photo was taken not far from where I live in Israel, where the European Bee-Eaters come to nest every year. I regularly visit this spot to observe them, as they are literally flying works of art, and so skillful catching insects in flight.Time
This was mid-morning. The sun was out, so lighting might be a bit harsh, but it does make the colors stand out so beautifully.Lighting
I was making sure to get a photo where the background is green as it makes the colors stand out more. Photographing such birds against the sky usually makes the color look "washed out".Equipment
Panasonic Lumix G9 and Panasonic-Leica 100-400 f/4-6.3 zoom lens. They're my favorite combo for wildlife!Inspiration
We're blessed to have the European Bee-Eaters come to nest in Israel every year, so I make a habit of visiting that site the right time of year. I make sure to stay far enough from the actual nests as to not disturb them. For this photo I was waiting for the Bee-Eater to take off so I could get the full beauty of his spread wings.Editing
Some cropping (originally this was a landscape photo), and some color correction. Not much else - they're this beautiful in real life!In my camera bag
Panasonic Lumix G9 and Panasonic-Leica 100-400 f/4-6.3 zoom lens, plus the Panasonic-Leica 12-60 f/2.8-4 and the Olympus M.Zuiko 60mm f/.28 macro. A tripod for landscape photos, some ND filters.Feedback
To photograph wildlife effectively, you need to study your subjects and their behavior. That way you can observe them in their natural surroundings, find the best spots and best backgrounds that they appear against. You'll also be ready to catch them in the frame when they move!
