Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Lake Toxaway, North Carolina. We drove to a wedding venue up high in one of the mountains there, and hiked through a large field to get to this spot. It was a hidden area slightly off the path, and fit the mood perfectly.

Time

This was later in the afternoon underneath cloudy skies. We had a nice breeze blowing from a storm off in the distance, and we were rushing to shoot everything we could while we still had the diffused sun up.

Lighting

The sun was up high, but covered by clouds which diffused the light. A storm was off in the distance bringing darker clouds our way, so we rushed to use this lighting before we lost it.

Equipment

This area was a bit of a distance to get to, so I only used my Nikon d850 and my 85mm lens for this. The natural lighting helped to achieve the perfect mood for the shot.

Inspiration

This was a hidden area off the path we were walking that the model happened to spot as we were going by it. We explored the area and found the perfect gap in the trees that allowed for the best light and framing we could've hoped for. The mood was perfect and we couldn't pass up the opportunity to utilize this spot!

Editing

This shot had some minor retouching to clean up some areas that were dirtied from other poses in the wooded areas. For grading I tried to darken and introduce bluer tones into the background so that the orange tones in the skin could pop out more. I also increased the vibrancy of the model's tattoo so it would still catch eyes despite the overall muted tones.

In my camera bag

I always carry my nikon d850, along with 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and 105mm prime lenses. I'll occasionally add a couple external flash units and diffusers. I also can't forget my Manfrotto tripod, that has helped me in several scenarios.

Feedback

Seek opportunities when out and about! You might have a set plan in mind for your shoot or image, but there are always bound to be inspirations that happen on set. Don't ignore those ideas, never be afraid to take a risk and try something new or fun!
