Behind The Lens

Location

It was taken in Irvine Regional Park, Orange County, CA.

Time

It was around 10 am.

Lighting

This juvenile great horned owl was fed a few hours earlier and it stayed up way pass its bedtime. When the sunlight started to shine into its nest (a hole in the tree), it knew it was time to go to bed. After it got back into the nest, it decided to take one last peek before it closed its eyes. That was when I took this photo.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 7D Mark II and an 100-400 Canon L II lens.

Inspiration

Most owls sleep during the day. It is not easy to get an open-eye owl with sunlight.

Editing

Very little.

In my camera bag

For wildlife, I use the 7D Mark II and the 100-400 lens; for everything else, I take a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV with a 24-105 and either a 16-35 or 70-200. I travel light - Canon EOS M.

Feedback

Go early in the morning for the best opportunity to catch owls with their eyes open.
