Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Orange County, California.Time
Around sunrise on a winter morning.Lighting
When I shot this picture, the sun was still below the horizon, resulting in the purple tint in the photo.Equipment
I used a Canon EOS 7D Mark II and an 100-400 Canon L II lens.Inspiration
There were a pair of coyotes where I was shooting. One decided to behind me. The other, the one in the photo, was assessing how to get around me. I took this picture when it was staring into the camera.Editing
I was shooting into the light. Exposure on the coyote was brought up a stop to isolate it from the background. In my camera bag
For wildlife, I use the 7D Mark II and the 100-400 lens; for everything else, I take a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV with a 24-105 and either a 16-35 or 70-200. I travel light - Canon EOS M.Feedback
City coyotes are not afraid of people. They often come right up to us. I had a coyote pushed me off a narrow path from behind before. But they are not pets; they are wild animals. Never get close to a wild animal with babies. They will attack. Be careful. Shoot from a safe distance. Like the coyote in this picture, some will give you a few seconds for photo opportunities. Be ready and keep clicking.
