It was a slightly overcast day. The sun was behind me. The plant on which the bird was feeding is planted about thirty feet in front of a grey wall resulting in a clean neutral-colored background.Equipment
I used a Canon EOS 7D Mark II and an 100-400 Canon L II lens.Inspiration
I have been shooting hummingbirds since I got my first long telephoto lens in the 1960’s. I found hummingbirds are the easiest birds to catch in flight because they hover. I never stopped shooting them since. A good number of my hummingbird photos I posted were shot in my garden where majority of my flowers are hummingbird and butterfly friendly.Editing

For wildlife, I use the 7D Mark II and the 100-400 lens; for everything else, I take a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV with a 24-105 and either a 16-35 or 70-200. I travel light - Canon EOS M.Feedback
After over fifty years of shooting fast-moving subjects, sports and wild animals, I prefer to photograph with the lightest equipment. Away from home, I like the Canon 100-400 mm LII lens because of the added close focus capability. Hummingbirds in the backyard, I use a 200mm lens and sometimes with extension tubes for close focus. I move around a lot when I shoot, therefore, I do not use tripod. I found tripods limit agility and hence good composition and background.
