I always have some method of image capture with me, whether it’s my Nikon D850, or my cellphone camera. We were on our way out to dinner and I was stunned by the greenery in front of the restaurant. I whipped out my cellphone and, looking for the best composition, grabbed a few shots. The restaurant is located in Ocala, Florida.Time
Since we really like the restaurant service of staff who are not overwhelmed, we try to go before the evening crush hour. The light was soft with no cloud cover but approaching the golden hour. There were no other diners coming in to the restaurant at 4:30 pm so I was able to take my time and find the best composition to fill my frame with lines, curves, angles and lush color.Lighting
This was taken just at the beginning of golden hour so the light was softer. Additionally, this part of the restaurant landscaping is located under a portico. It gives a tropical feel to the dining experience and puts one in a “Florida state of mind.”Equipment
It’s always said that the best camera is the one you have with you. Nothing is truer in that statement! I had my iPhone X with me, so I switched to the Pro Camera app and handheld it for this picture. No flash, just beautiful light!Inspiration
I read an article that said a photographer is someone who inspects details, takes in an entire scene, or imagines what an image can be. In any case, their eyes take in much more than a casual observer. I guess I can really identify with that. My eyes always seem to seek out what’s special in everything. While someone else might see refreshing leaves walking into a restaurant, I was intrigued with the patterns, colors and lines. If I’m not taking specific images, I am always on the lookout for a texture or color to add to a photo.Editing
This shot is pretty much SOOC (straight out of camera). I enhanced the contrast and slightly added just a touch of saturation in Snapseed - which I consider one of the best mobile editing apps around.In my camera bag
My bag is a Slingshot from LowePro and I love it! It handily fits my Nikon D850, a Nikkor 24-200mm zoom lens (I haven’t had the money to invest in a full frame lens yet), a prime Sigma 50mm, and a first generation LensBaby. Of course I always make room for my clean cloth, and because this is Florida, bug repellent wipes live in a separate pocket of my bag. I have two tripods: a ThreeLeggedThing and a Slik. Depending on the job, I will decide which one comes with me.Feedback
Learn to develop a photographer’s “eye” - which of course means to take the time to see beyond the obvious. Look for lines, colors, tones and patterns. Try to imagine what a scene might look like in black and white. Scan for tiny details that escape the casual observer. It’s okay to become a child again and experience the first time awe in something new or ordinary. Just take time to stop, smell the roses and investigate the colors.
