It didn't have much control over the lighting. It was mostly overcast with short periods of bright sun.Equipment
I used Canon EOS 7D, Canon 100-400 mm. @ 400.0 mm., hand held.Inspiration
It’s so impressive to see the skill of surfers managing 30+ foot waves.Editing
Shot RAW. I adjusted the light/contrast, sharpened.In my camera bag
I use only Canon equipment. Now I use EOS70D, EOS80D. 3 zoom lenses. 100-400mm. 28-135 mm. 18-55mm. Manfrotto tripod. Manfrotto Backpack 50. B+H ND Filter 8x.Feedback
I live on the East side of Oahu, so when the surf report says it's going to be a good day, I wake up at 3 am to get to the North Shore early enough to claim a good spot. There is a lot a waiting around for a good wave, for the photographers as well as the surfers. It's a lucky day when all the conditions are right, and the waves are as good as the surf report predicted. I use plenty of sunscreen and settle in for a 12-hour photoshoot. It's very zen-like as the light/sun/clouds/rain offer so many photo possibilities.
