Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken at one of the most famous surf spots in the world, Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.
Time
It was in the morning around 11 a.m.
Lighting
It didn't have much control over the lighting. It was mostly overcast with short periods of bright sun.
Equipment
I used Canon EOS 7D, Canon 100-400 mm. @ 400.0 mm., hand held.
Inspiration
It’s so impressive to see the skill of surfers managing 30+ foot waves.
Editing
Shot RAW. I adjusted the light/contrast, sharpened.
In my camera bag
I use only Canon equipment. Now I use EOS70D, EOS80D. 3 zoom lenses. 100-400mm. 28-135 mm. 18-55mm. Manfrotto tripod. Manfrotto Backpack 50. B+H ND Filter 8x.
Feedback
I live on the East side of Oahu, so when the surf report says it's going to be a good day, I wake up at 3 am to get to the North Shore early enough to claim a good spot. There is a lot a waiting around for a good wave, for the photographers as well as the surfers. It's a lucky day when all the conditions are right, and the waves are as good as the surf report predicted. I use plenty of sunscreen and settle in for a 12-hour photoshoot. It's very zen-like as the light/sun/clouds/rain offer so many photo possibilities.
