Thanks so much Jayne. In the winter time, Waimea Bay is the best big waves surfing spot on the North Shore of Oahu.

Love this photo of Waimea Bay! I have a Waimea Bay photo in my bathroom that is super cool. Surfers on the beach watching the wave - crazy winter swell. I actually bought the photograph on Oahu from a Japanese man. We have attended several Eddie Aikau opening ceremonies because it was such an amazing, nostalgic thing to get to witness.

Thanks so much Debra. The last Eddie Aikau competition was on 2016, it doesn’t happen to often and you can see it better streaming on your computer.

I used Canon EOS 70D, Canon 100-400 mm. @ 400.0 mm., hand held.Inspiration
It’s so impressive to see the skill of surfers managing 30+ foot waves.Editing
Shot RAW. I adjusted the light/contrast, sharpened. In my camera bag
I use only Canon equipment. Now I use EOS70D, EOS80D. 3 zoom lenses. 100-400mm. 28-135 mm. 18-55mm. Manfrotto tripod. Manfrotto Backpack 50. B+H ND Filter 8x.Feedback
I live on the East side of Oahu, so when the surf report says it's going to be a good day, I wake up at 3 am to get to the North Shore early enough to claim a good spot. There is a lot a waiting around for a good wave, for the photographers as well as the surfers. It's a lucky day when all the conditions are right, and the waves are as good as the surf report predicted. I use plenty of sunscreen and settle in for a 12-hour photoshoot. It's very zen-like as the light/sun/clouds/rain offer so many photo possibilities.
