This wild fruit tree endures a rough life beside the sea. She is drenched in salt spray and grows in cracks of the bedrock, but she is strong and flexible, bends to the blast, blossoms every Spring. Perhaps we should think twice when we wish for a soft and comfortable life.:)

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken just down the road from my home on Saltspring island BC Canada.

Time

In the morning, but with so much cloud and wind the time was not all that important.

Lighting

Lighting was grey filtered overcast. Not, one would think ideal, but as it was the very essence of this stormy shoreline that I was interested in capturing it was appropriate.

Equipment

I used my trusted old friend, a Nikon 3200 with the standard kit lens 18 -55 mm. I adjust my photography to the camera and lens I have with me rather than go wolfing after exciting new equipment. My mind is within the subject matter seeking a theme to express visually.

Inspiration

A windy day on the waterfront, the waves rolling in and the clouds rolling overhead. I took a series not just one single image. In this one I used the wild fruit tree to create a metaphor for all lives lead in adversity, how life struggles have their own reward in toughness and flexibility. A big theme expressed within the frame, one we can relate to during the pandemic.

Editing

I always post process my RAW images, mostly using the Lightroom paint tool to adjust the whole picture is many ways. I adjust to help the subject have its say rather than force my feelings and thoughts on the image. Nature works through me.

In my camera bag

I leave my (skinny) bag at home, I do have a long lens as well and choose it for particular situations where its qualities will work best.

Feedback

Every landscape has wild days of cloud and wind. Sunny days are great, but the world has other moods and other ideas to communicate than nice and pretty, just as people do. We can step out of our own perspective and take a walk on the wild side. That way we grow, experience the world more fully and have our minds expand. As has been said before, we are part of everything we have met.
