Having started using my cellphone camera I figured I should do the obligatory selfie, but found that i could look aside, not smile directly into the camera, pout my lips or gape and show my teeth ( I googled all the styles of selfies, I do research). The beach where i have taken many photos, is really as much me as my beard and so is in the frame too.

Behind The Lens
Location
On a familiar beach on my home island ( Saltspring Island, Canadian Gulf Islands)Time
Morning, but overcast.Lighting
The overcast flattened the lighting, giving an even grey filter.Equipment
A simple Acer cellphone, handheld, no flash.Inspiration
My first day with the cellphone camera, I wished to capitalise on its great DOF and wide angle. An experiment, a departure from my usual dslr. I had researched 'selfies'in advance and decided that rather than staring at the camera I could present a profile, and include the beach and distant islands. A self portrait of myself would necessarily include my ocean beach environment.Editing
I always do post processing with Lightroom. I began photography using a darkroom and know that post processing involves a series of adjustments that permits me to show what my eyes saw and my imagination could evoke. When I take a photograph I compare what the camera recorded to what I actually experienced and felt and adjust accordingly. I wish to effectively communicate a visual idea.In my camera bag
No bag, just me and whatever lens is on the camera. My challenge is to make images that make the most of what is there around my neck. Making photographs is more about my expertise, my sensitivity and creativity. I am a visual artist, I look and look, feel my way into the eventual image, let the world speak to me.Feedback
Let your images speak for you, your individual self. By all means learn the camera machine and how others use it to express themselves. Look and look at the images on viewbug, you can learn a lot ( what you like, what you hate :) ) Your aim should be to work towards presenting you own unique perspective and becoming more and more proficient at doing that. Photography is a big tent but there is always a seat reserved for you.
