Behind The Lens

Location

On Beaver Point on Saltspring Island BC ( one of the Canadian west coast Gulf Islands)

Time

Morning sunrise. A bitterly cold north wind. I did not spend much time here before I ducked back into the shelter of the point.

Lighting

Natural lighting, you can see the low angle of the sun and the winter clarity of the morning light.

Equipment

My old and trusty Nikon D 3200, standard 18-55mm lens

Inspiration

The arbutus has taken a beating over the years on this exposed location, I liken that sense of endurance. I liked the vivid blue of the waves, their texture, their intent to crash against the cliff. I liked the limited number of elements, no distractions, making a powerful image with a strong story line. I liked the orange against the blue, each working to strengthen each other.

Editing

I always post process with Lightroom, mostly to bring the image to how I experienced it with my eyes and my feeling for the scene.

In my camera bag

I normally leave my photography bag at home and adjust my photography to the lens i have chosen for the day. I adapt to the conditions and equipment rather than attempt to force my ideas on the subject.

Feedback

Know colour theory so you can use the natural colours to advantage. Feel the mood of your subject. experience it in your heart so you might be able to communicate that to others. Technical is important but no heart makes for poor images. We make pictures to tell others. There are more skills than camera ones.
