Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Fielding Park, a bird sanctuary and walking trail park in Sudbury, ON, Canada. Many photographers visit this park because to walk, hike and take advantage of the opportunities to photograph birds, ducks and swans. The chickadees are so used to human presence that they will land on and eat seeds from your hand; they even approach those walking on the trail.

Time

Mid-afternoon. I'm not an early riser and I like to hike in the afternoon.

Lighting

The lighting for this shot was a bit challenging because it is in the shade.

Equipment

I captured this image with a Sony A600 and a Sony 70 - 210mm lens. Hand held. When hiking or walking, I like to travel light. Sometimes a bring a monopod, but not this time.

Inspiration

I love the challenge of capturing birds. They often move fast and between different lighting conditions. If I can get a sharp shot, I'm really pleased.

Editing

I did some post-processing to bring out the bird's eye and enhance the contrast of the feathers.

In my camera bag

Sony A600 with the 18 - 55 mm kit lens, 70 - 210mm lens and sometimes I bring along the FE 4.5 - 5.6 70 - 300mm G OSS lens (a full frame lens which gives more magnification on my APSC sensor. When I bring the longer lens, I bring a monopod for stability. If I'm not hiking or walking, I use a tripod, especially with my 30 mm macro lens.

Feedback

I'm still in the learning phase when it comes to capturing birds. High shutter speed needs to be priority and enough depth of field to capture the entire bird while still creating a bokeh background that is not distracting. It's tricky. I don't like auto ISO because then I have to do exposure compensation for shade or bright light - just one more adjustment when you have little time. So I set a high ISO and adjust the rest. I always shoot in manual for maximum control of the outcome.
