Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken outside Churchill, Manitoba, Canada while on a tour with Frontiers North.Time
About 10:30 a.m. in November.Lighting
The day, like most at that time of year in northern Manitoba, was heavily overcast. Between the white snow, the whitish bears, and the grey sky, there was very little contrast and almost no shadow.Equipment
Sony A6000 with a 70 - 200 mm lens at 183. No tripod because there was nowhere to put one. Lens was rested on the window of the Tundra Buggy we were in. You don't get off the Tundra Buggy in polar bear country!Inspiration
I was continually inspired by the behaviour of the polar bears and captured many interesting images. Just the opportunity to be up close with polar bears was exciting. Sometimes they even came right up to the Tundra Buggy.Editing
I enhanced the contrast and reduced the blue cast from the lighting. In my camera bag
Sony A6000 with the kit lens, a 70 - 200 mm lens, 70 - 300 mm lens for full frame which gives me a longer lens with APSC sensor and a mono-pod if hiking or a tripod if I don't have to carry it too far.Feedback
With wildlife of any kind, I always focus on the eyes and wait for the eyes to be looking my way. In this case, the two bears were engaged and not looking my way, but focusing on the eyes was important. I overexposed from the light reading due to the snow, to avoid grey snow.
