Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Zermatt, Switzerland.

Time

I was awakened by my partner’s brother around 8am who came into the room and said “dude you’ve got to come check this out, bring your camera.”

Lighting

When I came to the window to look at the view, I immediately knew that the natural lighting was perfect. Even though it was something like 20 degrees Fahrenheit, the sunlight kissed the tip of the mountain and made it seem like it was very warm up there.

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D Mark III with a 50mm 1.8 STM, handheld.

Inspiration

It was my first time ever seeing the Matterhorn (except at Disneyland in California lol) and it was mainly the current lighting that inspired me to get the shot.

Editing

I typically try to do as little post production as possible, so for this shot I adjusted the color a tad, and added a curved layer for contrast. A few other small tweaks and I was finished.

In my camera bag

After upgrading to my 5D Mark III, I usually carry around my 85mm 1.8 USM, my 50mm 1.8 STM, a speedlight, polarizers, and extra batteries of course ! Occasionally I’ll have my tripod with me if I know I’m going to be shooting low light or want to slow down my shutter for any reason.

Feedback

Wake up early in order to see light that you usually don’t during the daytime. And bring your camera everywhere of course.
