Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in downtown Atlanta. I was attending GSU and so downtown was always where I went to shoot.

Time

This photo was taken at about 6pm on February 8th. The clouds were dense and the fog was low enough to cover some of the tops of the buildings in the city, so I really wanted to capture that moment.

Lighting

With it being a cloudy day, there was really nice soft light throughout the city. The Coca Cola sign lights up with LEDs, and so I had to get the timing right for the LEDs to have a nice pattern for the shot.

Equipment

I used my very outdated Canon Rebel T3i (trying to get a new camera soon) with a 50mm f/1.8 lens. This specific shot was taken at f/3.5 with an exposure time of 1/100th of a second, ISO 100.

Inspiration

I was trying to find nice compositions in downtown Atlanta, and with the fog covering part of the building in the back, I saw this scene and had to get a shot.

Editing

I never do TOO much post-processing, but for this one, I changed it to b&w, and then made some minor lighting adjustments with a curves layer.

In my camera bag

Typically, I like shooting with as little gear as possible so I don't have to lug stuff around with me all the time. So i usually use my Canon T3i with my prime 50mm f/1.8. I have a few other lenses including a 24mm f/2.8, a 55-200mm f/4-5.6, an Opteka fisheye lens, and a basic 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6. I also have two external speedlights made by Yongnuo, as well as a small soft box and some reflectors. Occasionally I'll shoot with my film camera too, an Olympus OM-2, it keeps things interesting from time to time.

Feedback

Just get out and shoot as much as you can. There have been many days when I got out to shoot but don't get anything good, and I sometimes get de-motivated by this but that can't stop you from getting out there again and again. This shot was lucky for me because the fog was low enough to cover some buildings. A few minutes later and the fog rolled away.
