If you are anybody in the skateboarding world, then you have probably rolled your board in Venice, California. Venice Beach is known all over the nation as a hot spot for serious skateboarders.Time
I was visiting Venice, Beach as a tourist and hit the Beach path at mid day, which created the dark shadow under my subject.Lighting
Mid day is not my favorite time to be out and about with my camera, but I was sightseeing and came upon the skateboarders and shot off a series of shots as they jumped and turned and showed off their talents.Equipment
I was handholding my camera and using my 70-200 canon L lens and since there sun was shining and I had a lot of available light, I was able to use a low ISO and still set my shutter to a fast setting to catch the action sharply.Inspiration
My brother used to live in Venice Beach 40 years ago and I spent a lot of time visiting him and the Beach where I would get lost in watching the surfers and skateboarders who frequented the strip, so on a recent vacation to Los Angeles, I had to head to Venice Beach and relive some memories from the pastEditing
I processed this action shot as a raw image by doing a basic Lightroom edit, then brought it into Adobe photoshop for some finishing touches. I lightened the shadows on the main skater's face and darkened the background to make the skateboarder pop. I also cloned out some skateboarders from the background and created a balance of three subjects. I also blurred the background slightly to help keep the focus on the main subject. In my camera bag
In my bag I always have my canon 5D with a telephoto and a wide angle lens...I never know what subject I might come in contact with and like a girl scout, I want to always be prepared.Feedback
Action shots are all about the action, sharpness and perfect moment....Use a burst mode and take a lot of shots from different angles. Studying your subject's actions so that you can predict their actions and be ready will make for better results. Last, watch your backgrounds and use a telephoto so that you can create blur and put the focus on your main subject.
