Such elegant power uplifting & strong. On this day I decided I wanted to try my hand at bird photography. I see it all over the place & really admire it but never really felt compelled to take a beautiful photograph of a bird before. I live about 20 minutes from the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary - we go there all the time but never with my camera - so my wife & I decided to make a day of it. In my head I knew the image I wanted but guessed it would never happen because of how fast birds move, especially their wings. I took about 200 hundred photos that day & this was about the 5th photo I took. It was one of those moments I could see though my lens but decided that about a million things would prevent this photo from happening, mainly motion blur. It was the image that I had in my head but began managing my expectations. As I was photographing the other birds this image was sitting in the back of my head the entire time, wishing it into existence. I was so excited when I got home & developed this image. It was as I had intended, it was as I had imagined. It was a beautiful day & a result my wife & I love feeding birds on our property, they remind us of our day at the bird sanctuary. This photograph was taken at Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary just outside of Morrisburg, Ontario. I saw the image unfold in my viewfinder but speculated the chickadee was too fast & the final photo would be blurry. I kept dreaming of this image all afternoon while I was taking more photographs, trying capture the next best image assuming this one was lost. I was excited to see the results when I got home.Time
This photograph was taken at 12:58 in the afternoon. The sanctuary is very quiet and still until the birds decide to announce their presence to you. Once they they are hungry, they fly around you, sing song, land on your head, body and take food from your hands willingly and with great pleasure. Itl is a remarkable experience that I highly recommend.Lighting
Natural lighting overcast winter day with the ground covered in snow for a bit of bounce light.Equipment
Canon 60D and a Canon L 70-300mm, f4Inspiration
I'm not a bird photographer but love exploring new genres everyday. I live about 20 minutes away from the sanctuary, I visit it often but never with my camera. I see people all the time with high-end gear and the longest lenses imaginable trying to capture beautiful birds and I wanted to know what that felt like so I set out to take a picture of a bird I wanted to take it my way with my approach and my style, and this is the end result.Editing
Bring the RAW image into Lightroom, adjust the contrast minor color and profile adjustments. That's it.In my camera bag
