Location
I took this photograph & developed the negative in my home studio. I learned photography using film & I am always excited to load my Bronica S2 with medium format 120 film when I get the chance & get back to my roots.Time
You know, I can't remember the time of day I took this photo. I think it was in the later afternoon. This camera is 100% manual so there is no date and time stamp & I forgot to take notes for this portrait.Lighting
I was looking to build on my understanding of Rembrandt lighting & building on that for this portrait. I wanted to explore fusing that lighting with a classic fine art portrait & a retro glamour shoot & this photo is the final product of those ideas all coming together.Equipment
I used my Bronica S2 on my Manfrotto 190 tripod. I also used my trusty Godox 600ADs with 2 softboxes. It is a lot of fun fusing modern tech with an old camera like the Bronica S2. Pocket Wizards really did most of the communicating between the old & new tech & made this shoot a lot of fun & super easy.Inspiration
Janet inspires me, always (seen here in photo). I was also inspired by my creative vision of a classic fine art portrait, a retro glamour shoot using fine art Rembrandt type lighting. This session was meant to be easy, fun & quick. I had no idea this portrait would become one of my most popular images. I didn't set out to create anything special beyond what I wanted to achieve - I had a creative vision & I followed it without censorship or self judgment. I wanted Janet & I to have fun exploring an idea while honing my lighting skills. We did that & I feel it paid off. I really love this portrait & I am so happy others do too.Editing
This is a medium format 120 film portrait so I developed the negatives by hand using film developer, stop bath & a rapid fixer. I then scanned the negative - again using old & new tech - then developed the photo on my computer.In my camera bag
For film portraits like these, I normally carry my Bronica S2 with a 50mm or 75mm, my Manfrotto 190 tripod & my 2 Godox 600ADs with softboxes.Feedback
