What an absolutely stunning photo...the fragile pup and the strength of the soldier shine through and the tattoo saying on his side captions this perfectly. How precious.

Behind The Lens

Location

I snapped this photo while deployed to Afghanistan in 2009-2010.

Time

This photo was taken late afternoon probably around 3 or 4 pm.

Lighting

The light was coming from a late afternoon sun when it was about the hottest part of the day.

Equipment

This shot was taken with a Nikon D90 and a Nikon 35mm prime lens. No other equipment used.

Inspiration

I have always been inspired to take amazing photos. But sometimes you see something that you have to shoot because you might not see it ever again. For this photo, I always had my camera at hand and just happened to look over and see my buddy giving our rescued war dog some shade in the torturous heat of the desert. She was a dog that had no mother and was at great risk of being abused and killed in the war zone. My unit cared for her and my buddy featured in the photo was instrumental in helping rescue her to the US where she lived with my family for 10 years until she passed away in May 2020. She was one of a kind, her name was Oso. You can Google (Phil Bourrillion + Oso) to read many news stories on her life with me. It’s worthy of a movie. Thanks for letting me share and nominating me (us).

Editing

I made some minor adjustments in saturation and bringing out shadows. It’s also cropped a little for alignment but other than that, not too many adjustments. I try to keep it as real as possible.

In my camera bag

My go to camera is my Nikon D850 with the 200-500mm telephoto. Sometimes with a 1.4x teleconverter. I also keep my 24-120mm lens as well as a 20mm prime. I recently acquired the Venus Optics Laowa 24mm f14 2x Macro Probe lens. That is a fun lens to play with. Sometimes I’ll carry a flash. But always extra batteries, memory cards and tripod for sure. Also, a few small accessories like rags, dust blower, tools and other little stuff that you never know that you might need.

Feedback

I shoot a lot of wildlife and birds. The best advice I can give is have patience. Even when shooting landscapes I sometimes have to wait for a shadow to move or the light to change and can find myself waiting for that “one” shot. It also doesn’t hurt to have large capacity memory cards and to just click away. In todays world, it’s definitely an advantage to be able to shoot 1000 or more shots to find just a few keepers.
