Location
I was on a cruise of the Doro River in Portugal in September 2018.,and we made stops along the way on our way to Lisbon. I don't recall the exact location of this shot.Time
This was mid-afternoon and the sky was overcast.Lighting
There was beautiful light on the rows of grapes and it was the reason I wanted to take the image, but I almost did not post it because I did not like the sky.Equipment
but I shot it with a Windows Lumia 950 camera phone. f-1.9, 1/370 s, ISO 50. Processed in CS6 Extended with PPW panel and then later opened in Photoshop 2021 to use the new sky replacement feature to remove a very dull sky.Inspiration
There were many features of this scene that made me want to shoot it. First, there were the long leading lines for the grape plants that forced your eye deep into the image. This was enhanced by the surrounding trees and that leads you to the mountain range in the distance as it starts to disappear in the haze.Editing
Processed in CS6 Extended with PPW panel and then later opened in a newly purchased copyPhotoshop 2021 to use the new sky replacement feature to remove the very dull sky. My focus was to enhance the light and color in the grape rows. This was easily done with the Picture Postcard tools. I also wanted to make sure I kept detail in the image. While the Lumia 950 is an old camera phone, it creates 20 MP files which really helps keep detail. The final piece was when I used the new sky replacement tool in Photoshop 2021 to replace the dull sky. I was amazed at how well this tool works. It is essentially one click away. You have to do all the prep work of selecting the correct sky in that the lighting has to match the image you are importing it to. There is no masking necessary, so you don't have to spend time with brushes to paint arounf the tree branches. There are other adjustments that allow you to blend the effect, and thus I was able to blend just enough interesting clouds into the image without making it obvious that the sky was replaced. In my camera bag
Well in this case the equipment was the camera phone, something which is not normally in my bag, as I no longer use it as a cell phone, as I now have a Samsung phone. As they say, your best camera is the one you have with you. I have just made a number of adjustments to my camera kit. I no longer have my D810. It was replaced with a used Z7. I only have 2 Z lenses so far a 14-30 f/4 S lens which is a wonderful lens and a 24-70 f/4 S lens as well. I have an FTZ adapter for my other F lenses. The key ones are a 24-120 f/4, a 70 to 200 f/2.8, and a 300mm PF f/4 lens. What I carry depends on what I intend to shoot, but moving to a mirrorless camera has reduced the weight I carry by a significat amount.Feedback
Carry any tool that will let you take decent pictures. If your phone does not make hi-res images, carry a small camera. If you are planning to shoot landscapes anything from 14-30 will do nicely. Keep your eyes open for things in your image that will draw your eye. In this case it was the lighting on the long rows of grapevines.I tripod is helpful for landscapes but I did not use one here. I did make sure that I held the phone steady.
