Took it in the all natural jungle part of my garden in the Cordillera de Guanacaste.Time
In the afternoon not very late.Lighting
Luckily the sun cast a nice spotlight through the leaves. Having said that, asilidae love to bask in the sun, regardless of the climateEquipment
A 180mm Sigma macro. For reasons only comprehensive to marketing morons, they don't sell their best macro ever any more. The D800e serves to get the best details. Other gimmicks? Leave your garden poison freeInspiration
For many years I have been a keen hobby ethymologist. I detest sancudos, mozzies and other vampires. Hence it always pleases me as nature's natural balance takes care of them.Editing
Crop and exposure adjustment. Decent photos don't need anything else.In my camera bag
For insects I carry a macro ( 150 mm Sigma now since a crack in a plastic ring of the 180mm) and the 200-400 f4 for fast moving hard to approach insects. NO, you DON'T need a tripod.Feedback
Be patient, know the behaviour of the species you are after and observe till you get a good shot. Always be prepared to switch to a different object of interest. I was actually observing bees when I spotted a few robber flies nearby. Don't feel obliged to drag a huge amount of gimmicks with you. A decent camera does 1000 shots one one card and battery. Rather carry a second lens for more flexibility
