I captured this photo in New York City after walking through Central Park on a rather miserable afternoon. I had entered into 8th Avenue after leaving Central Park near the Christopher Columbus memorial statute.Time
A favourite image taken in New York City when the setting was perfect to witness the steam rising from below the street surface due to the misty and rainy day. The photo was captured mid afternoon when traffic was crammed into the street and people were moving about in the rain.Lighting
The lighting was rather unique on the day. No shadows were evident as the city was basking in cloud due to the rainy conditions. The light at the time provided a perfect scenario to capture the feel of the city in all its glory, with lots of people moving around and famous yellow taxis of New York filling the street.Equipment
I have been the owner of a couple of Canon cameras now over the years. At the time of this shot I was carrying my Canon 5d Mkii. A very durable and serviceable camera, when coupled with a 24 x 70mm L series lens. Brilliant in lower light conditions which assisted in making this shot possible!Inspiration
The timing could not have been better as there was a halt in the traffic, allowing me to capture the stillness of the city at that moment. The streets were jammed with cars, particularly yellow taxis, which were a novelty to see for a visitor to the city at the time. New York city turned it on for me while I was there and allowed me to enjoy the true atmosphere of the city!Editing
The image was captured as a JPEG at the time due to the fact I was travelling and conserving disk space on my memory card. I did not do a great deal of post-processing other than small adjustments in LR to bring out the best exposure and highlights. In my camera bag
I shoot with Canon. My go to camera now is a 5d Mk IV, which I have owned for a number of years now. To compliment the quality of my camera body, I have three 'L' series lens, 24 x 70; 16 x 34mm and a 70 x 200. Also have a little cheapy 50mm prime lens. All are top quality and serve different purposes in different situations. Also have a top quality tri-pod for those moments when you are needing that degree of steadiness, together with flash capability. Always learning new tricks with all my gear.Feedback
Always looking to find the best time of day to shoot in this type of situation. This shot was probably not taken in that golden period, however, the lighting at the time was great and produced the atmosphere I was looking for. I always try to have my camera with me and primed to capture that shot you are chasing. Always helps to improve the quality of photography when capturing different images in different situations.
