Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at home, in the room where my grandmother spent the last months of her life.

Time

Shortly after my sister-in-law and my brother returned home with their newborn, maybe about noon, we introduced the little one to his great-grandmother.

Lighting

Natural light, whatever the windows of the room could provide.

Equipment

This photo was actually taken with a phone, nothing special in the equipment itself.

Inspiration

My grandmother's biggest dream was to have a great-grandchild before it was her time to go. The photo was actually taken two weeks before her passing - she had stage four cancer and we knew her time was very short. Knowing this, we had to capture their first meeting. It ended up being their last as well.

Editing

I increased the contrast a lot - there is something with photos of old people and the way contrast makes the shot more dramatic.

In my camera bag

I now have a Canon Rebel t3i with a kit lens (18-55mm) and a 50 mm 1.8 f.

Feedback

Aside from my hopes that no one would be in this same situation, I'd say don't try to direct anyone in the shot - such moments are beautiful because of the real, raw emotion. Just let it happen and try to get a good angle of it.
