Behind The Lens

Location

I hadn't had a day off from work in two years and finally got the chance for a short family vacation up in the Rila mountain.

Time

It was an early mountain morning, quite cold too. As the sun made us way up in the sky, the woods were walking up and all sorts of little creatures enjoyed the morning rays.

Lighting

More than anything I wanted the photo to look magical- as if it came out of a fairytale, as if it's from Narnia. The golden sunlight was exactly what I needed to achieve this.

Equipment

The photo was taken on a Sony DSC HX300, a microsensor camera. No flash used. Just a tripod and I used the optical zoom of the camera - I didn't want to scare the squirrel away so I had to shoot from a distance.

Inspiration

I actually wanted a bird. I was waiting for a bird. But somehow seeing this sweet squirrel play around gave me everything I wanted... and more. There is something so childlike in the forest's morning routine, something so pure.

Editing

I wanted bright colors. Considering this camera cannot replace a DSLR, I took the photo and then in post I reduced the shadows a little, then increased the saturation and contrast.

In my camera bag

Sony DSC HX300. And I just bought a Canon 600D (Rebel T3i in USA)

Feedback

Be patient. You cannot rush nature. Considering you will wait in the forest, wear warm but comfortable clothes that won't make noise when you need to move. That way you won't scare the animal away.
