I've seen and photographed them before. But wanted to try it with a macro lens instead of my telephoto.

Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in my backyard.

Time

This moth showed up around 4-5pm. Went in side grabbed my macro lens and tried for better pictures of this challenging moth.

Lighting

I wish the lighting was a bit better. They are really pretty in natural light.

Equipment

Canon 5D Mark IV Sigma 105 Macro Lens Hand held SS 1/640 F/3.4 Iso 320

Inspiration

I have taken pictures of this moth before with a telephoto lens. This time I wanted to try with my macro lens. I love a challenge and I thought the faster F stop would help since it was in the shade.

Editing

The only thing I did was crop the picture.

In my camera bag

My main equipment is: Canon 5D Mark IV camera, Sigma 150-600mm C lens, Sigma 105 Macro Lens. Tameron 1.4 teleconverter, Canon 12.5 and 25mm extension tubes and a Tameron 10-24mm wide angle lens.

Feedback

I would say using a telephoto lens 150 mm would be my max. The 105mm macro was great because if it came in close I had no problem. I also recommend using a fast shutter speed to freeze the motion of the wings. Handheld might be easier than a tripod as they are quick moving. Patience for the perfect picture.
