Behind The Lens

Location

I captured this photo at a weekly summer market in our city.

Time

I shot this photo at 11:11AM CST (2018 August 31).

Lighting

It was a sunny late morning. The musician and his group were on a stage in partial shade. They were facing south so were in a nice light.

Equipment

I was shooting with my Nikon D5100 and a Tamron 18-400mm F3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD Model B028 fitted with a ProMaster 72mm Circular Polarizer. I shot at 360mm f/6.3 1/1000 sec ISO 800 Manual White Balance set at "Cloudy" Exposure Spot Metering. I was hand holding the camera and lens.

Inspiration

'People' photos are not something I do much of. I was inspired to take this photo because I want and need to practice photographing people. It was challenging shooting in a crowd of people (usually someone inadvertently gets in my way), but shooting in a crowd gives me a sense of anonymity. This makes me feel more comfortable.

Editing

This photo was shot in JPEG. I used ACDSee Pro 6 to slightly crop the photo, and to make minor adjustment to the exposure and lighting -- to slightly brighten and lighten the photo.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon D750, D200 and D5100 cameras in my bags along with my Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II, a Nikon Micro f/2.8 lens, a Tamron SP 24-70MM F/2.8 Di VC USD lens, a Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD lens, and a Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary lens. I also always have my Samsung S8+ SM-6955W cellular phone with me (I like to use it when I want or need a wider angle photo.)

Feedback

My advice for others is to shoot as often as you can. Look for photo opportunities everywhere including in your own home and/ or yard and at public events. At public events, it is easier to move around relatively unnoticed in the crowds with your camera. Try to take advantage of the lighting - when it is sunny or when it is cloudy or if rain or any other weather system is moving in, and play with your f stops. Take more than one photo... you can always delete them if they do not turn out. My advice is to try different camera settings, cameras and lenses as well. My most important advice of all is to pick up your camera(s) and go out and have fun!!
