Behind The Lens

Location

I captured this photo along Hwy #4 north of Swift Current, Saskatchewan.

Time

I shot this photo at 5:43 AM CST (2007 July 28).

Lighting

It was an early late July morning just after sunrise. There were clouds in the sky and the colour of the sun was quite red (I cannot remember if there was dust or smoke in the air, but given the time of year, it could have been either atmospheric element or even both elements.)

Equipment

I shot this hand-held, with a Nikon D200 Aperture Priority f /3.3 1/500 sec ISO 100 Auto White Balance Pattern Metering. I shot this photo using my old kit lens (I originally bought with my F80 SLR film camera) - a Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G lens at 28mm.

Inspiration

I have always loved sunrises and sunsets but am very rarely out and about in the early morning. I was heading out to a nearby Provincial Park early morning to go birding with my son and my recently purchased Nikon D200 camera. I really didn't know much about how to operate the camera (and hate manuals) but wanted to try it out the best I could. When I saw the beautiful sunrise happening on my right, I pulled over and snapped a few shots. This was my favourite of the series of shots I took.

Editing

This photo is right out of the camera, shot in JPEG format.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon D750, D200 and D5100 cameras in my bags along with my Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II, a Tamron SP 24-70MM F/2.8 Di VC USD, a Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD Lens, Nikon f/2.8 105mm Micro f/2.8 lens, and a Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens. I also always have my Samsung S8+ SM-G955W cellular phone with me (I like to use it when I want or need a wider angle photo.) If I am going to go for a drive to spend some time out and about shooting, I like to take all my cameras and lenses... you just never know what you're going to need. If I am going out to shoot something specific, I take my Nikon D750 along with the 70-200mm lens, 24-70mm lens, and depending what my shooting goal is, sometimes the 105mm lens. I may have to dig out the old Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G kit lens and add it to my bag - maybe renew my friendship with this old lens.

Feedback

My advice for others is to keep your batteries charged up, keep your camera(s) handy (you never know when an opportunity to shoot will arise), and to appreciate everything around you and to always look for photo opportunities. Then shoot, shoot, shoot.... shoot as often as you can. Look for photo opportunities everywhere including in your own home and/ or yard... even if you have to shoot through the window (this could be an incentive to try to keep your windows clean.) We have some treasures in our own yards and in and near our home locations we don't often think of photographing. Try to take advantage of the lighting - when it is sunny or when it is cloudy or if rain or any other weather system is moving in, and play with your f stops. Take more than one photo... you can always delete them if they do not turn out. I shot this photograph 14 years ago -- not really knowing much about operating the new camera. If I have a similar opportunity, I would now use my newer DSLR (Nikon D750) and my Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. When you are shooting, my advice is to also try different cameras, lenses, and camera settings. My most important advice of all is to pick up your camera and go out and have fun!!
