Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while out on a day trip with my husband. We took a back road near the farm where my husband grew up. This place is within a couple miles of the farm.

Time

We stopped for a few minutes to look out over "The Divide" as a rainstorm was moving in. This photo was shot at 12:00PM CST on 2016 July 26.

Lighting

Even though it was noon, the rain was moving in quicker than we first realized so it was cloudy. The cloudy conditions and approaching storm made the lighting nice considering it was high noon on a summer day.

Equipment

I was shooting with my trusty old Nikon D200 and a Nikon 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 lens at 28mm Aperture priority f/14 1/200 ISO 100. Handheld. The lens is my old kit lens from my first SLR - Nikon F80.

Inspiration

I love photography. Ever since I was young, I liked taking pictures. I am now trying to hone my skills. I love the Saskatchewan prairies, and when I saw the rain storm moving in, I felt compelled to attempt to photograph The Divide and the approaching rain storm.

Editing

I shoot JPEG (have not had time to learn a program that works with RAW yet.) I used ACDSee Pro 6 to straighten the horizon slightly (that seems to always be an issue for me.... I must not see straight.) I also used ACDSee to slightly adjust the lighting and exposure a bit to brighten it.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Nikon D200 and D5100 cameras in my bag along with my Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR lens and did have the Nikon 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6. I have since purchased a Tamron SP 24-70MM F/2.8 Di VC USD so have taken the 28-80mm out of my bag. I do have a couple other lenses but up until June 2017 I usually just have the wider zoom and the longer zoom with me unless I am going out to shoot something specific. Need a new and bigger bag - I now have a new D750 and a bigger zoom to haul around on outings now.

Feedback

My advice for others is to shoot as often as you can and get off the main roads. This was taken on a back road (caution advised though... we did get caught in the fast moving rain and because we were on a dirt road, we did some slipping and sliding to get out.) Usually noon isn't the best for lighting, but the day I shot it, the conditions were right for this photo... with the storm moving in at noon. Take advantage of the lighting when it is cloudy or rain is moving in, and play with your f stops. Take more than one photo ... you can always delete it if it doesn't turn out.
