Location
I shot this photo while traveling with a group of 12 photographers, including a professional guide, in Iceland in 2018.Time
The photo was taken between 9:30 am and 10:00 am near a lake.Lighting
It was a cloudy morning. The moving clouds seemed to interfere with the sunrise. Consequently, the intensity of the lighting, along with the golden-hour landscape colors, varied from seconds to seconds. To capture the dynamic nature of the lighting variation, I had to take more sequential shots than what I usually do for sunrise and sunset. A real-time video would be ideal for recording the beauty of the dynamic changes.Equipment
The photo was shot with Canon EOS 5D Mark III and a 16-35 mm lens on a tripod without a flash. The camera setting was ISO 100, 23 mm, f/16, 1/5 sec).Inspiration
Because of cloud interference, I sensed being patient was imperative. While waiting, a thought came to mind. While the cloud shadow covered a broad area of the landscape, the sun looked like it was struggling. Still, it persevered in rising, showing courage. Therefore, I should remain confident that sunrise would eventually overcome interference and prevail in the end. A series of shots confirmed my thought, and I was glad to be able to select this shot telling the story.Editing
I didn't use any preset for this photo. However, I did use Lightroom to check out the white balance and tweak essential elements and crucial parameters such as clarity, saturation, and vibrance. For color adjustment, I paid heed to details surrounding the emerging sunbeam at the corner of the mountaintop, which appeared to show hindrance in exhibiting full radiance by the clouds. I was pleased to see the reflection on the lake spontaneously follow suit.In my camera bag
While traveling for photographing, besides the Canon EOS 5D Mark III with the 16-35 mm lens, I have a Canon EOS 5D Mark II with a 70-200 mm lens. It's heavy adding both up, but it saves me time and clumsiness for changing lenses on just one camera. Naturally, I have a sturdy tripod. Moreover, I often carry a handy Leica V-LUX [Type-114] with a 25-400 mm lens and an iPhone 11 for shooting snapshots without a tripod.Feedback
For a scene like this in a remote locale, my advice is to join a photography tour group. The guide could provide a well-defined itinerary and daily schedule alongside convenient transportation. Alternatively, you should find like-minded pals to scout out your and neighboring areas and embark on the photo trip together. Safety is of concern before sharing of joys and interests.
