Behind The Lens

Location

This image was shot at my small home studio in Kingston, Jamaica. It's where I tend to create most of my portraits.

Time

In the 1st month of 2020, before the world went into lockdown. It was a studio setup with control of my own lighting so ambient light wasn't a factor.

Lighting

This was a 1 point light setup. Using a large octagon with grid powered at 1/8, high enough to get spill light on the backdrop.

Equipment

5D Mark iv, 70-200mm lens at f/2.8, one Godox FlashPoint XPlor 600 with a Zomei tripod.

Inspiration

Strings!! the strings inspired the Model and I into doing something. The original idea was of an image she saw and told me about it. We build upon the idea by collaborating with the makeup artist on the color and direction the makeup should take. However on the completion of the makeup, I had the makeup artist change the placement of the feathered lashes from above to below the models eyes. Why?? I don't know myself, I just felt it would look different and indeed it does..lol

Editing

The image was edited in Photoshop using frequency separation, then dodging and burning. I adjusted the colors Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I pack my trusty 50mm f/1.4 and my 85mm f/1.8. Prime lenses just make life easier. Depending on my plans I will take my 70-200mm f2.8, my Tonika 16-28mm f/2.8. Tripod for Landscape shots or Godox TT600 for extra lighting on a outdoor shoot along with Canon 7D mkii or 5D mkiv.

Feedback

Nothing feels better than the execution of a planned shoot with all the pieces falling into place. Having a fun model with great ideas to enhance your own, along with a makeup artist who can help bring those ideas to life is also great. When working with team of creatives, as a photographer, it takes tolerance, compromise and a vision to see the end of a project before it even begins. However that doesn't mean that the fun is lost or that not having the ability to plan out the end of the vision will make the shoot less productive. My advice would be; to build a team, listen to that team and make it a team effort.
