I took this photo at my home studio in Kingston, Jamaica. This is where I can take the time to get the right shots.Time
According to the Exif, this shot was taken on 12:08 pm May 30th but time tend to stand still when working under studio conditions, especially when the shoot is enjoyable!Lighting
I knew I wanted this image to bring out her eyes so I specifically borrowed my MUA (MakeUp Artist) light to get the circle in her eye but I didn't want the image to have a flat look so in addition, I placed a beauty dish above and a reflector below to give more curve to the model's face.Equipment
I use Canon 5D Mark IV and the Canon f/2.8 70-200mm USMii. Flashpoint XPlor 500 with a beauty dish, a makeup ring light (not mine) to create the rings in the model's eyes and a white cardboard to bounce light under the chin.Inspiration
It was a collaboration and it was just to be a normal beauty shoot but I had to turn it into something when I saw the ring light the MUA was using. If it's not a thoroughly planned shoot then I take inspiration from what I see as I setup for the shoot so, the MUA light, the model's dress gave me the insight I needed to create this shot.Editing
Post processing was done in Photoshop. Frequency separation and the usual dodge and burning but I decided for this shot I want to it to have a monochromatic effect so I used the Black & White adjustment layer most editors tend to overlook that comes with Ps and simply move the sliders until I saw something I liked. In my camera bag
I pack my trusty 50mm f/1.4 and my 85mm f/1.8. Prime lenses just make life easier. Depending on my plans I will take my 70-200mm f2.8, my Tonika 16-28mm f/2.8. Tripod for Landscape shots or Godox TT600 for extra lighting on a outdoor shoot along with Canon 7D mkii or 5D mkiv.Feedback
Sometimes inspiration can come to you at a moment notice. Visual cues are the same.. This shot would have been good but it became better with just adding the ring light. Sometimes a slight tweak on set makes a huge difference and as an artist, this is how you grow :-)
