Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken during a trip to Upper Austria in December 2019.It shows the foothills of the Alps and the transition to the hilly country in eastern Austria.

Time

It is easy to recognize this picture was produced at the golden hour. I was on my way home and actually not not in the mood for photographic at all. However, when I passed this point, Ansel Adams suddenly said to me: "You don't take a photograph, you make it". So I grabbed the camera from my backpack, positioned the tripod and pulled the trigger.

Lighting

The result picture is a combination of several exposures because I thought that without a filter in front of the lens, it would be impossible to capture all lighting moods.

Equipment

As with many of my pictures with a 7D classic and the Canon 24-105mm / f4, built on a tripod.

Inspiration

As already mentioned at the beginning, I was not on a photo safari at all, but rather on the way home. But as a photographer I think you always have a picture in your mind's eye, even if it's subconscious. And so it was here. I was tired and it was pretty cold, but something told me: take a picture. Only at home did I realize the potential of this picture.

Editing

I always shoot my landscapes in RAW format. So here too. The exposures were combined in the PS CS5 over several levels and developed using curves and HSL.

In my camera bag

I have to admit that I actually always have my 7D with me. Be it in a photo backpack with the equipment or just in the back seat of the car. Preferably with a 24-105mm / f4 lens. I recently started using a "real" wide angle with 13-17mm / f2.8. which is pretty cool.

Feedback

The mountains or the Alps of Austria are a diverse area for photographers. Sunrises or sunsets in connection with the rapid temperature changes create fog or haze in different colors. Cold nights or hot summers create a wide variety of lighting situations or cloud formations. So it is not particularly difficult to get a good subject in front of the lens. You just have to catch the right time.
