Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was captured at Onion Creek near Moab, Utah in the shadow of Mt Waas.

Time

After a long day of travel from St. Louis, MO, I arrived with my partners in art at the Utah desert a few hours before sundown. Our friendship began that morning when I was picked up from the Salt Lake City airport by a band of art and nature loving people driving a 2001 Isuzu Trooper.

Lighting

The sky was filled with clouds and the sun was setting creating soft light. To punch it up a little I added a fill flash to help the model pop out of the background.

Equipment

The wind gusted frequently, so the remotely triggered Speedlight was covered with a simple plastic diffuser. My canon 5d M3 was handheld and secured to my shoulder with a side sling strap.

Inspiration

The human form in nature is a wondrous thing. Dedicating time to capture its beauty in the untarnished wilds of Utah was a bucket list item. After discovering the right guide and model team, all I needed the correct timing, and personal resources to make it happen. It was an expedition of a lifetime that produced amazing results. Ten out of ten, I would recommend.

Editing

Depth is added to the photo by increasing the contrast.

In my camera bag

The items in my bag change for the assignment and the terrain. In this case, I knew I would be shooting in the wild and beautiful nature of Utah, but little more. Flexibility and diversity were my guides. Two Camera bodies, two remote trigger systems, two Speedlights, batteries, chargers, and Holy Trinity of Lenses. ( Ultra Wide 16-35mm f/2.8 Zoom Lens, Mid-Range 24-70mm f/2.8 Zoom Lens, Telephoto 70-200mm f/2.8 Zoom Lens)

Feedback

While I enjoy assisting aspiring models in creating beautiful works of art, the professional model is worth every penny in these brief and highly coordinated moments. With on-point posing and quick transition, the opportunity to capture an amazing image happens scores more frequently.
